The sulphur healing springs in Vienna were popular even amongst the Romans. To enable them to be used, Therme Oberlaa was opened in 1974 in the south of Vienna. In 2010, this was converted to become Therme Wien: 26 pools, 24 sauna and steam rooms, 2,500 loungers and a 6,000 m2 health and fitness area make it the largest thermal baths in Austria.

Therme Wien snapped up two awards at the renowned European Health & Spa Awards 2011: first place in the category "Best Spa" and third place in the category "Best Sanatorium". In autumn 2011, Therme Wien was additionally bestowed with the EWA Marketing Award, considered the Oscar of European spas!

Architecturally, the individual areas lie like rocks in a stream that runs throughout the thermal baths. Follow this little stream and you will pass the areas of Rock of Beauty, Rock of Peace, AdventureRock, SaunaRock and FitnessRock. In between these, lie two large thermal bath landscapes, whose indoor and outdoor pools, heated benches and loungers invite you to stay awhile. An aroma room with water beds, a romantic grotto pool, AlphaSphere loungers for deep relaxation, a fire lounge, Austria's first thermal baths library, an audio book lounge and a cinema leave nothing to be desired. Particularly the little ones, can romp around to their heart's content: four different slides, a wild water canal, three jumping towers, a water playground, a puppet show and a karaoke stage make this possible. Children's entertainment and supervision complete the indoor offering. But the outdoor area, the "Seasonal Garden", is also impressive: In addition to the 25 meter long sport swimming pool as well a spring pool, a brine pool and various outdoor pools, Therme Wien offers a beach volleyball court, a boccia court, a summer bar, outdoor massages and many sun loungers for relaxation.

Did you know that the two medicinal springs at the Vienna Spa - with sulfur contents of 62.4 and 64 mg/l - are among the most effective springs in Europe?

Tips:

For an additional charge, be pampered in the Brine World. Special saunas, a graduation works and a Floatarium for weightless relaxation utilize the positive effects of salt. There is no limit to the culinary delights on offer in the Thermal Baths restaurant, sauna bistro and juice bar. If you have a hankering for something sweet, then head for the Kurkonditorei Oberlaa pastry shop. This traditional Viennese operation is right next door to the thermal baths and processes 16.5 tons of chocolate every year. Oh, and a visit to Therme-Wien-Fitness is recommended for a workout afterwards. Alternatively, take a walk through the monument-listed Kurpark Oberlaa spa park, which surrounds the thermal baths. The gardens here are particularly popular: a flower maze, film location, love garden, Japanese garden and many more create a unique atmosphere.
