A great tip for hot summer days is a visit to the 21 kilometer long Danube Island, the favorite recreation area of the Viennese. Cycling, skating, beach volleyball, bathing - or simply treating yourself to a break from sightseeing with a picnic - a trip to the Danube Island is always worthwhile. The nearby Old Danube also offers several natural bathing sites for a dip in the water to cool off.

An outing to the Lainz Game Reserve, the former hunting grounds of the imperial house in western Vienna, is a great nature experience for the entire family.

An excursion to the Hirschstetten Botanical Gardens is also worthwhile: a 900 meter-long maze in the shape of a butterfly excites visitors, as does a willow tunnel, a witch's garden and an animal enclosure. Exotic animals and plants await you in the Palm House.

14 city hiking paths, well posted and accessible by public transport, invite you to discover a bit of the city on foot. Children also enjoy the forest playgrounds, nature trails and beautiful scenic overlooks and picnic grounds. Motivated parents with babies or small children can also undertake Vienna walks with strollers.

Children under school-age may ride for free on the Wiener Linien (subway, tram, bus). Children also ride free until the end of the school year in which they turn 6 years old. On Sundays and holidays, on November 2nd and 15th as well as during the Vienna school vacation, all children of an Austrian school (private or public) under 18 years old also ride free. This also applies to all other children under 15 years old.
