The organic wood-fired oven bakery Gragger & Cie opened its doors in Vienna's 1st district in December 2010. Connected to the sales room made from natural materials such as oiled oak and slate is the heart of the bakery - the wood-fired oven designed by master baker Helmut Gragger himself. This is where you can watch the bakery items being created. At lunchtime, the bread is offered with soup, stew or salad - either to be enjoyed in the aromatic bakery or to take away.
Gragger bread is also available at Backraum - Kipferl und so in Neustiftgasse in the 7th district. The Backraum (baking room) is not just a sales outlet, but also an architect's office. Architect Anna Kovacs sell organic bakery items here, alongside bags, caps, postcards and designer pieces. For lunch there is soup by Zuppa, the soup specialists in the 9th district.
Right opposite, in the passage between Neustiftgasse and Lerchenfelder Straße, Mr Dieter Smolle bakes exclusively with organic ingredients and wholemeal flour in the Kornradl. All the tasks of the baker's trade can be watched in the tiny bakery: grinding grain, kneading dough and baking bread. The full-service baker delivers his finished goods by bicycle.
Did you know that Vienna produces more bread grain than Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg together?
A stroll deeper into the 8th district brings you to one of the two outlets of Kaschik-Demeter-Brot located in Lange Gasse. Here and in the 17th district, you'll find high-quality bakery items and other organic products, such as the organic ham of Viennese ham maker Thum. Demeter is also the trademark for products from organic-dynamic farming practice.
Bread made 100 percent from demeter grain can also be bought at Josef Weghaupt's outlet in Vienna's 1st district. The organic bread specialist swears by traditional craftsmanship: from purely manual processing, to leaving the dough to rest naturally, to letting it stand for one day on the baker's shelf. In addition to the classic varieties, "Joseph - Brot vom Pheinsten" also offers delicacies such as organic rye-honey-lavender bread and healthy Joseph snacks, as well as organic muesli, fresh salads and tea specialties from Saint Charles. Tip: delicious Joseph bread is always available in "Motto am Fluss" at the "Vienna City" landing stage!
Further pleasurable impressions can best be had on a stroll across Naschmarkt. This is also where one of the two outlets of wholegrain bakery Waldherr is situated, which attracts with organic products, wholegrain treats and special allergy-friendly bread. Products for allergy sufferers, as well as exclusively hand-made bakery items and delicious hand-crafted organic chocolate are offered by organic full-service bakery Gradwohl on Naschmarkt and in seven other outlets across Vienna. Sugar addicts should also head for the organic confectionary Hanauer in the 17th district: over 40 types of chocolate and unusually decorated cakes for every occasion are made here by hand from top-quality cocoa masses. The Hanauer cake experience world with show bakery, organic café and chocolate cinema is a little off the beaten track in the 23rd district, but is well worth a visit!
