Vienna Design Week turns the whole of Vienna into a showplace and showroom for design. In collaboration with Vienna's museums, production companies, designers from around the world and this year's host country Spain, the festival offers many different ways to approach the topic of design: at over 100 events, exhibitions, installations, discussion rounds and at numerous parties.
At the heart of Vienna Design Week each year are the "Passionswege": selected designers are invited to participate in an experimental and playful collaboration with Viennese retail spaces or traditional businesses. This allows local production sites to be rediscovered and revitalized. This year, the designers are working with glassware specialist Lobmeyr, the Vienna Silver Factory, furniture makers Wittmann and Kohlmaier as well as Staud's Jams. The results can be viewed on a tour of the operations.
The Vienna Tourist Board is also making a contribution to Vienna Design Week this year. For the European Home Run competition, design teams from six European countries have been invited to design a contemporary Vienna souvenir. The six submitted designs will be exhibited during Vienna Design Week from 28 September to 21 October 2012 and beyond that in the MAK Design Shop. The cocktail reception is on 5 October 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The general public can choose a favorite from amongst the submitted designs.
This year, the area around Ottakringer Straße in the 16th and 17th districts is an important staging area for the Vienna Design Week and Passionswege. The festival headquarters are at Gschwandner in the 17th district, laboratory and info point are located in the Kunsthalle project space on Karlsplatz.
