Wining and dining in Spittelberg

The revitalized Biedermeier district near the MuseumsQuartier has countless restaurants, cafés and bars with idyllic gardens - often slightly hidden in romantic courtyards.

The Vienna Spittelberg, with its small, romantic lanes and the charming Biedermeier buildings is right next to the MuseumsQuartier. Between Breite Gasse and Sigmundsgasse there is a lively bar area, from rustic beer bistros to trendy bars, from fancy restaurants to popular student hang-outs. Most of them entice guests in the summertime with Schanigärten (as the Viennese call their outdoor dining areas).

The young crowd likes to go to Amerling-Beisl. The idyllic Biedermeier garden in the inner courtyard here is especially worth seeing. Just as popular is the neighboring Lux, which is a restaurant, café and bar all under the same roof. At the café das möbel you can buy not only a melange coffee and an apple strudel, the furniture and decorations are also for sale. Next door at the Burgermacher they make organic hamburgers that are famous throughout the city and creative vegetarian dishes. Even the catsup is homemade here.

Several restaurants in the area serve Viennese cuisine: Witwe Bolte is the oldest restaurant in Spittelberg and also offers a comprehensive menu for vegetarians. Viennese treats are also the specialty served at the restaurant called Zu ebener Erde und erster Stock. A mixture of Viennese and French cuisine is served at the Crêperie-Brasserie Spittelberg.

Kulinarium7 is modern and trendy. In addition to an excellent cuisine, they also sell selected wines, spirits and aceto balsamico here. A visit to the vinothek in the 17th  century wine cellar is well worth it.

Tip: The annual Christmas Market in Spittelberg (from mid-November until Christmas) is particularly atmospheric.
