100 Years of the Konzerthaus

From the very beginning, the purpose of the Wiener Konzerthauses was clear: "To be a place for cultivating fine music, a gathering point for artistic efforts, a home for music and a home for Vienna." For the formal opening on 19 October 1913 in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph I., Richard Strauss composed his "Festliches Präludium op. 61", which was followed by the sounds of Beethoven's ninth symphony.

100 years and never a silent moment

The Wiener Konzerthaus will focus its entire 2012/13 season on the proven mixture of tradition and contemporary diversity as a crescendo leading up to the grand birthday celebration on 19 October 2013 with unique highlights.

The Berlin Philharmonic will give a guest performance under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle. Soloists such as Patricia Petibon, Elīna Garanča, Hilary Hahn, Thomas Hampson, Lang Lang and Daniel Barenboim will lend a special brilliance to the orchestra concerts. Top ensembles such as the Artemis Quartet, the Emerson String Quartet and the Hagen Quartet guarantee exquisite chamber music. With performers such as Elisabeth Leonskaja, Mitsuko Uchida and Maurizio Pollini, we can expect great moments in piano music as well.

The anniversary will be celebrated with six new series covering a broad range of themes. For example, Martin Grubinger will present a pure percussion concert series for the first time under the title "Percussive Planet". Thomas Gansch will explore the limits of jazz. And "Triolino" will now offer even the youngest among us (three and up) to sample the concert airs. Happy birthday, Wiener Konzerthaus!
