In Haydn’s tingling description of the lunar landscape, rocks and dust are replaced by fragrant flowers and lush green forests, and the silence is broken by twittering birds and lyrically brilliant arias. The plot is that of a typical opera buffa of the time (first performance on 3 December 1777) and was penned by Italian comedy poet Carlo Goldoni.
The event will be stage-managed by Tobias Moretti, with five further performances of this production to be given by the end of 2009 in the Theater an der Wien Opera House, which is one of Vienna’s oldest and most well-established stages. Built in 1801, its excellent acoustics and intimate atmosphere make it the ideal venue for performing the works of Joseph Haydn.
Haydn’s opera “L’Anima del Filosofo” will also be performed in concerto form - on 25 September with the kammerorchesterbasel conducted by Paul Goodwin.
A special New Year’s Eve concert will bring the Haydn Year to a close. Under the musical direction of Adam Fischer, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra will play Haydn’s oratorio “The Creation”, sung by the Arnold Schönberg Choir. The top-class soloists are Genia Kühmeier, Michael Schade and Hanno Müller-Brachmann.
