The Albertina modern is all about modern, postmodern and contemporary art. It is just a few minutes' walk from the Albertina. A place has been created here that presents the big names of the art world from past decades. The museum's collections bring together formative Austrian artists such as Hermann Nitsch, Maria Lassnig and Valie Export, as well as Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Christian Ludwig Attersee and Gottfried Helnwein.

The content of the museum revolves around the Essl Collection. The Albertina modern also hosts new exhibitions of both Austrian and international contemporary artists every year. It's about art that leaves nobody feeling cold.

Focused on the Essl Collection

The Essl Collection is one of the most important collections of Austrian art from the second half of the 20th century. It has been on permanent loan to the Albertina since 2017. Magical Realism, Viennese Actionism, as well as representatives of postmodern and contemporary art: The Essl Collection combines all the trends that were formative for Austria's more recent art history. The Albertina modern thus has a strong identity-giving function.

The Künstlerhaus in renovated splendor

In order to be able to present these unique collections, which encompass paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, photographs and videos, in an appropriate setting, the opening of the new museum was preceded by a refurbishment of the Künstlerhaus lasting several years. The art institution built during the construction of the Ringstrasse boulevard in the 1860s has been one of Vienna's most important locations for art since its opening in 1868, and has always kept up with the times. The Künstlerhaus now radiates again in a splendor last seen at the time of the Ringstrasse's construction.
